New Laser Wiki

New Laser Wiki

I have set up a laser Wiki to help the new and experienced users find information quickly. This is a neutral gathering spot to help find information that is being posted here and other places. It is not linked to one site nor does it encourage you not to continue to support this wonderful gathering of individuals. Being a Wiki, it is only as good as the users input. We can link back to all the conversations that answer newbies questions and then entertain them here. If you are not comfortable editing a Wiki, ask here to have your information added. I hope this encourages a lot more discussions on specific ideas and issues in the future. Thanks!

  1. What is the point of the "External Links: Blog, forum, etc" category if things like this keep getting removed from it?

I think Stephane should get a proper forum, i'd gladly pay domain/server costs since it's what i do and i get low cost services. Google Communities aren't very good for easily finding threads, we can't reply with images etc, etc ..

  6. Gary McKinnon Yeah HalfNormal already has a forum & we've already had a bit of an issue with trying to "poach" user-base from here, but it was all a misunderstanding. You're correct that Google Communities isn't the best for finding things/replying with images/etc. Hence the intention to supplement this community with extra resources. Also, I think you're right that we need to have a proper discussion with Stephane regarding it. I can't see the harm in setting up extra resources & sharing them. Nobody seems to have a problem if we link to forums operated by other people to help explain things like alignment, etc. (see comments on this post: https://plus.google.com/101703286870399011779/posts/1SKmZs2TR2v)

What I find here is that there is a total misunderstanding of how a community works. A community like this revolves on the idea of sharing information/ideas/resources. I don't understand why a member of the community cannot share a link to their own created content. Isn't that what we all are doing anyway every time we post?

Apologies if I come across as having a dig at anyone in particular as that is not my intention. I understand the moderators have a job to do to keep this place on topic & free of spam & it's much appreciated.

  7. I don't know for sure but i think Stephane was worried that, since this is the best resource for the K40, that some people may be using the site to promote their commercial ventures, rather than just sharing stuff they've made.

  8. Gary McKinnon That's fair enough in regards to promotion of commercial ventures. Commercial infiltration into this group would be a great "market" point for them, but annoying for us as users. I, for one, would not like to be exposed to people advertising stuff all the time. Unless it happens to be something specifically related to the K40 to make life easier. (e.g. some people have made cool mods that are beyond my electrical/mechanical capabilities but I would be happy to purchase off another non-commercial hobbyist member here).

  9. Gary McKinnon Yuusuf Sallahuddin Stephane Buisson The reason for the Wiki is simple, if you search this forum, which a majority of the new users do not, you will see the same questions over and over. In the past week, there are no fewer then 6 questions each on mirror alignment, software and "what do I need for a new user." I explicitly did not link back to my forum anywhere on the Wiki. I would even be happy to prominently have a link to this group on the K40 section. It is all about the COMMUNITY OF USERS. If you look at who is active here, it is about a dozen of the same people. A lot have joined but few participate. All I am asking is to make using this resource, the K40 group, as easy as any other.

  10. OK, it's not the first time, I see a wiki link to a G+ community, the idea is great. now as you also said, owner of the site matter, (not only for .com) but also because if he disappear (not paying domain) the wiki databank is gone. If we go for one, we need to find a agreement on the data (+back up in my drop box), to be sure we could have it back if anything happen. Then I will be happy to link it on the top of this page. managing a forum is to much for me (and I don't want repeat and repeat again, as many user don't make the effort to search)

  11. Since I am less than a year into this K40 adventure my experience is:
I love that there is massive amounts of information and help. However that information is "everywhere" and not easy to search, index, bookmark etc.
Each of these community technologies seem have its strengths and weaknesses but they all are hard to search ....
I spend most of my time now on:
-This forum and related ones on G+
    -The FB forum
    -The smoothie site and links
I like the way the smoothie site is shaping up and will contribute all of my documentation to it when I am complete with the conversion.
That does not help with those that have other K40 generic questions and non-smoothie conversions ....
It would be useful to have one "link" place that is kept refreshed that can be searched for all things K40 .... perhaps that is a dream :).
